Composer/Drummer Christian Zünd reveals his very tasty, extraordinary world.
Very few drummers compose music, let alone creative music that reveals such deep inner beauty and great aesthetic judgement. Christian Zünd plays drums with a gracefulness that echoes the late, great Norwegian drummer, Jon Christensen. His compositions have a lyrical sensibility with roots that not only celebrate jazz, but also pay homage to funk and rock music with a dash of punk for good measure. The exceptionally talented musicianship of Pirmin Schädler on keyboards and Dominik Eberle on guitar round out this Swiss trio that know how to play with extreme confidence and imagination. The entire “Experience of Life” album features an extraordinarily tasteful and refreshing jazz-rock vibe.
Christian says the album reflects the changes and new things he has experienced over the past ten years. The highs and lows are captured in compositions such as “Confidence,” “Slow Down,” and “Heartache.” Beyond simple-word categorizations, titles such as “Dirty Harry,” “Treat Me Like A Guinea Pig,” and “Ernst in Haft” express the highly creative and often humorous attitude this music emanates. There is a refreshing simplicity with these fabulous musicians. The album is accurately described as “straight forward songs with picturesque melodies, dazzling improvisations and pure groove.”
From the very first track, “Consequence of Increase,” one can feel the joy in every second of music. As in life, there is both playfulness and serenity… and this comes from all three musicians having both artistic breadth and technical facility. When you listen to the tasty drumming at the beginning of the title track, “Experience of Life,” you are led into a pulsating world that flows with organic wonder on both guitar and keyboards. The melody line is like listening to the best of what life has to offer. This rhythmically propulsive trio celebrates the very essence of what it means to be alive. And it comes through loud and clear on every single track.
